Travel Guide

Getting to Touraine

Touraine is remarkably accessible from Paris and other parts of Europe. Whether by high-speed train, car, or air, reaching the Loire Valley is straightforward and quick.

By Train — The Easiest Option

From Paris (1 hour by TGV)

The TGV high-speed train is the fastest and most convenient way to reach Touraine from Paris. Trains depart from Gare Montparnasse approximately every 1–2 hours throughout the day, arriving at Gare de Tours in just 1 hour.

Paris → Tours by TGV

  • Departure: Paris Gare Montparnasse
  • Arrival: Tours (Gare de Tours)
  • Journey time: 1 hour
  • Frequency: 12–20 trains daily
  • Cost: €25–€70 depending on booking time and flexibility
  • Booking: SNCF Connect (official), Trainline, Omio

Booking tips:

  • Book 3–4 weeks ahead for lowest fares (€25–€35)
  • Non-refundable tickets (Prem's) are cheapest but inflexible
  • Standard tickets (€40–€70) allow changes and refunds
  • Youth/senior cards offer 25–50% discounts on standard fares

Regional Trains (TER) Within Touraine

Once in Tours, the TER regional train network connects to key destinations:

  • Tours → Amboise: 20 minutes, €6.30, 8–12 trains daily
  • Tours → Chenonceaux: 30 minutes, €7.10 (station is 2 km from Château de Chenonceau)
  • Tours → Azay-le-Rideau: 30 minutes, €6.80
  • Tours → Chinon: 50 minutes, €10.40, 4–8 trains daily

TER trains are slower and less frequent than TGV but provide car-free access to many châteaux. Check schedules at TER SNCF.

  • Bordeaux → Tours: 2 hours, direct TGV
